Way back in the 1960’s the car industry saw an increasing interest in the sports coupe with car buyers wanting more than mere modes of transport. The Italian car industry assumed the mantle in Europe and produced the finest examples of the day with exotic specimens designed by the likes of Pininfarina, Bertone and Gandini to name but a few.

The Lancia 2000 Coupe joined a list of sports coupes manufactured since the early fifties. By the late sixties and early seventies Lancia had produced an array of models with innovative designs incorporating technological advances. One prime example of this is the Lancia 2000 HF Coupe. Designed by the legendary Pininfarina the 2000 HF had the following modern features, five-speed transmission, power assisted steering and even electronic fuel injection. It also boasted more comfort and refinement than other models with top quality bright work and magnesium alloy wheels.

The Lancia 2000 HF Coupe was considered to be one of last true Lancia cars, designed before Fiat took control of the company in 1969.

A BUYERS GUIDE

The Lancia 2000 HF Coupe was actually an evolution of the already successful series II Flavia coupe launched in 1963. However, it was more worthy of the title ‘sports coupe’ producing over 30% extra bhp with the 1991cc electronic fuel injected engine.

Exterior

The 2000 coupe is indeed rare, especially the HF version with as little as just a handful in the UK for sale. The first thing to look for when potential buying such a rare car is exterior condition, as Lancia has a reputation of excessive corrosion. However these early models do not suffer the rust problems associated with later generation cars. Check all the usual places such as sills, door panels and floor pans. You will also have to take a good look underneath as some of the rot hotspots are front and rear sub-frame mounts.

Under the bonnet

The Lancia 2000 HF Coupe was an extremely well engineered machine with the Bosch electronic fuel injection system being ahead of its time. Reliability is good providing the car has been well maintained so check the documented history is in good order. Make sure fuel lines have been replaced as they tend to weaken with the pressure from the fuel injection, bearing in mind a leak could spell disaster.

INTERIOR

The HF coupe has a manual 5 speed transmission which is both strong and reliable, but the first sign of any problems will be second gear synchro failure, so be aware of this on the test drive. Brakes are discs all round and again providing good maintenance should prove trouble free. Interior parts are rare to find so make sure everything is in good order. Seats will have to be re-trimmed if in poor condition.

Lancia has won more world rally championship titles than any other car manufacturer. It also had the first standard production v6, load bearing body shell and electrical system in a car.
