HOW OLD DOES A CAR HAVE TO BE TO QUALIFY FOR CLASSIC CAR INSURANCE?

There are no hard and fast rules for what defines a classic car – although age requirements often come into classic car insurance criteria.

Most classic car auto insurance companies and enthusiasts agree that a classic will usually be an old car, at least 20 years old. But other cars, including rarities, special editions and performance cars, can also fit the ‘modern classic’ criteria for car insurance purposes.

Broadly speaking, a classic is typically a car that:

  • isn’t widely available to purchase new
  • is cherished
  • has limited mileage on the clock
  • isn’t being used as an everyday vehicle
  • has some appeal as a collectible

CLASSIC CAR INSURANCE FAQS

Is classic car insurance cheaper?

Typically, classic car insurance tends to be cheaper than standard car insurance. This is because specialist vehicles are driven less, do less mileage, and are usually carefully looked after by their owners – all of which is reflected in the rates set by insurers. At Heritage, we strive to offer the best value classic car insurance for our customers. Of course, some rare or performance cars may be a bit more expensive to insure, but again, with limited mileage you’re going to see some savings.

How old do I need to be to take out a classic car insurance policy?

The minimum age is 25 for a classic insurance policy through Heritage. In some circumstances we may be able to provide cover for drivers 21 and over, subject to strict terms and conditions. The maximum age for new policyholders getting classic car insurance with Heritage is 79 years; for existing clients there are no upper age limits.

Does a classic car insurance policy cover me for driving other cars?

No, generally you would already have this with your standard car insurance. If you are unsure, check your Certificate of Motor Insurance for the ‘Driving Other Cars’ wording.

Our multi car insurance does cover you to drive other cars, but only if you are over 25 and your everyday cars are on cover with Heritage Insurance Brokers. The other car you wish to drive must be insured in its own right, not owned by the policyholder, and for emergency use only.

Do you offer a discount to classic car club members?

Yes, we can offer a 15% discount for classic car club members, as well as members of the Military Vehicle Trust and Green Lane Association, plus to NHS staff. Just let us know which club you’re a member of when you request your quote.

My car isn’t finished yet; can I insure it while I’m restoring it?

Yes, a policy is available for your restoration project. Providing the car is garaged we can insure it on a ‘laid up’ basis, which covers your car for accidental damage, fire and theft. Remember to change this to standard insurance before driving your classic car to its first MOT after restoration, if an MOT is needed.

I have no garage to store my vehicle in; can I still get classic car insurance?

No garage doesn’t mean no classic car insurance; we may still be able to offer you cover. Just get in touch to discuss your situation and we’ll be happy to talk you through your options.
