The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth was produced to compete in group A European Racing and is of course a homologation special produced as a road going car from 1985 launched at the Geneva motor show. The Sierra was not a rallying success due to being just two wheel drive but did perform in Touring car championships.
On the street the Sierra Cosworth soon established its reputation as a hooligan car, impossible to insure or at least ludicrously expensive and faster than anything else on offer with 200+ bhp and 0-60 mph times of around just 6 seconds, we are in super car territory.
Values are still high but as the Escort Cosworth has over taken its predecessor the Sierra can be purchased for the right price, perhaps it’s time to be a hooligan again.
The car came in black, white and moonstone blue, oh and one grey version and they are all a little piece of FastFord history, who wants to take one home?
3 doors do rot check front suspension turrets and were the inner wing meets the bulk head. Also check the other infamous rot spot which is the rear chassis legs look behind the rear spring pans and where the suspension arms pass under the chassis rail. If its rust free you’re on to a winner. Sills and floors will require close inspection so look behind sill covers and wheel arch trims.
Engines were continually improved for reliability, cooling and longevity through each production run so avoid the earliest models if possible. Head gasket failure can occur so look out for water marks running down the engine block under the exhaust manifold. A puff of oily exhaust smoke on start up indicates failed valve stem oil seals. Check the Turbo by removing the front hose and feeling for front to rear movement as this means it hasn’t got long left. Steer clear of over modified examples unless done professionally with documented proof.
Make sure the engine bay loom is up to the task as they tend to dry out with age and become brittle. Watch out for synchromesh wear but generally transmission is good. Beware of a sticky or seized handbrake as this could mean replacement of the rear callipers which are no longer available as factory parts. Watch out for cracked dash boards on the car as this is common and not easy to repair properly. Interiors are a bit plasticy but this adds to the charm of a car from the 1980’s.
