Ford Fiesta MK II (1983 – 1989)

The Ford Fiesta MK II was Fords first hatchback hot on the heels of its main rival Volkswagen. By 1983 the little Ford had evolved into a modern practical car although still only available in 3 door form or panel van for the light commercial driver, it now had 1.3 and 1.6 engine options as well as a five speed manual transmission. In 1984 Ford introduced a 2ND generation XR2 with a larger more distinctive body kit and then in 1986 powered the XR2 with the lean burn engine featuring a revised cylinder head and carburettor. 1984 also saw a diesel Fiesta for the first time but with excellent fuel economy comes a rough under powered unit that was rather noisy and the Fiesta Diesel was massively out sold by its petrol counterpart by 1988 4 cars to 1.

The Mk II Fiesta comes more refined than the now aging first generation model; its new wraparound front would depict the new style ford for the 80’s. The all new interior was functional and modern giving the Fiesta cabin a feel of space and the engine bay was wider in order to incorporate the new engines and a five speed transmission. Buyers Guide

  • The XR2 Mk II Fiesta is a classic hot hatch, unlike other versions of the Fiesta. With this in mind there is plenty of choice out there if you are looking to buy so here are some hints and tips to get the best example.
  • The first thing to consider is the cars condition with rust being a major problem as the Fiesta is a little flimsy and therefore somewhat prone to the brown stuff. Here is a list of areas to check for any serious corrosion: bonnet hinges and front edge, outer and inner front wings and around indicators, door hinges, tops of suspension turrets, battery tray, make sure the sills are good and the car hasn’t had sill skins welded over the top of the originals. Check the boot inside including the wing cavities and inspect the boot lid around the rear screen, fuel filler cap and floor pan.

  • Take the car on a road test and listen out for clutch wail while pulling away due to a worn clutch; gearbox whine is a worn box or synchro wear. Spongy brakes may be air in the brake system and soft suspension could mean worn shock absorbers. Interiors are quite bland but hard wearing with little or no real problems and make sure everything electrical is in good working order, good luck.
