Ford Capri 2.0 GT (1974 -1976)

Britain’s very own Mustang… The Ford Capri

In 1969 Ford launched its all new fastback coupe at the Brussels Motor Show. The Ford Capri was mechanically based on the successful Ford Cortina but with looks to die for. With a developing range of models, this British “pony car” had options to suit all tastes at affordable prices. It was of course a success, not only nationally but also as far afield as Japan and America. The Mark two version was introduced in 1974 and was new and improved with a larger interior plus a hatchback rear for greater practicality, GT and Ghia models showed performance and luxury were both available amongst the many options.

Today the Ford Capri is one of the fast Ford collection that has reached real cult status amongst the motoring enthusiast and with such a following, the rarer models such as the 2.0 litre GT are few and far between with only a handful left on our roads today. This brings us to current values which are strong and continuing to increase with some models reaching £30k and more.

A BUYERS GUIDE

The Ford Capri is still widely available on the classic car market, although GT models are difficult to find these days as the model wasn’t produced in abundance. However the things to look out for when buying any Ford Capri still apply.

Let’s start with the obvious 1970’s flaw, corrosion will always be a problem for cars of this era and sometimes it’s not what you can see it’s what’s hidden away behind poor repair work. Don’t just check the body work for rust as the worst could be underneath so be thorough.  Interiors can fare just as badly with vinyl seats being hard to repair and dashboard cracks a plenty. Again check the cabin and make sure it’s not going to need replacing any time soon.

The Ford Capri’s breaking system usually comprised of front discs and rear drums. They are not as bad as their reputation suggests and providing they are in good working order will stop the car just fine. The difference between most old cars and modern cars when it comes to brakes is you will have to apply a bit more pressure to slow the car down.

Gear boxes are generally good, but if it crunches then there could be a problem. Ford engines have a sound reputation, but look out for excessive blue smoke and steer clear if you find it. Always check the documented history of the car making sure it has plenty of evidence that it has been well looked after. The Ford Capri has a lowdown sporty feel about it but remember it’s not a modern car so don’t expect miracles, good luck.

INTERESTING FACT

The Ford Capri was famously considered to be the first of the European ‘pony car’ market, but it was a hidden fact until 2010 that the designer was an American. Mr Philip T Clark, who was famous for being one of the designers for the original pony car, America’s Ford Mustang launched in 1964.

Porsche 944 Turbo (1985-1991)

The Porsche 944 was all the good bits of the 924 with added 928 sparkle. The 944 bridged the gap between the 924 and the 911 and was accepted as a true Porsche unlike the 924 although it came from the same factory which was Audi in Neckarsulm.
