WHAT CLASSIC CARS DO WE COVER?

Kit cars, off-roading vehicles, ex-military and imported cars can readily qualify for classic or specialist car insurance. We also specialise in modified vehicles, vintage cars and motorcycles, classic campervans – basically most things that are older and out of the ordinary!

If you’re not sure whether your car counts as a classic, just give us a call and we’ll be happy to answer any questions. You can reach us on 0121 248 9229.

HOW OLD DOES A CAR HAVE TO BE FOR CLASSIC CAR INSURANCE?

Typically, most classics are 20 years old or older and are being used as a second (or third, fourth…) car by their owner. Other rare, special editions and performance cars can also fit the ‘modern classic’ criteria for car insurance purposes.

Broadly speaking, a classic car:

  • isn’t widely available to purchase new
  • is cherished
  • is being driven limited miles
  • isn’t being used as an everyday vehicle
  • has some appeal as a collectible

CLASSIC CAR INSURANCE FAQS

Is classic car insurance expensive?

Not usually – classic car insurance tends to be cheaper than standard car insurance. This is because classic car insurance rates are based on risk – which is lower when the car is being driven less, being properly looked after, and most likely stored off the road. Some rare or performance cars may be a bit more expensive to insure, and it also depends on the driver’s age and experience. With limited mileage you’re going to see some savings compared with ‘regular’ car insurance.

How old do I need to be to get a classic car insurance policy?

The minimum age for a classic insurance policy is 25 with most insurers. In some circumstances we may be able to source cover for drivers 21 and over, subject to terms and conditions. The maximum age for new policyholders getting classic car insurance with Heritage is 79 years; for existing clients there are no upper age limits.

Does a classic car insurance policy cover me for driving other cars?

No, generally you would already have this with your standard car insurance. If you’re not sure, check your Certificate of Motor Insurance for the ‘Driving Other Cars’ wording.

Our multi car insurance does cover you to drive other cars, but only if you are over 25 and your everyday cars are on cover with Heritage Insurance Brokers. The other car you wish to drive must be insured in its own right, not owned by the policyholder, and for emergency use only.

Do you offer a discount to classic car club members?

Yes, we offer a 15% discount for classic car club members. This also applies to members of the Military Vehicle Trust and Green Lane Association, and NHS staff. You’ll need to let us know your club and membership number when we give you a quote (or your NHS number).

My car isn’t finished yet; can I insure it while I’m restoring it?

Yes, a policy is available for your restoration project. Providing the car is garaged we can insure it on a ‘laid up’ basis, which covers your car for accidental damage, fire and theft. Remember to change this to standard insurance before driving your classic car to its first MOT after restoration, if an MOT is needed.

I have no garage to store my vehicle in; can I still get classic car insurance?

No garage doesn’t mean no classic car insurance; we may still be able to offer you cover. Just get in touch to discuss your situation and we’ll be happy to talk you through your options.

Can I get my excess reimbursed?

We do offer an excess protection add-on for your insurance, so that if you have to make a claim, you can get your excess back and don’t end up out of pocket. You need to take this cover out as an add-on, as it doesn’t come as standard on motor policies.
