WHAT IS CLASSIC CAR BREAKDOWN COVER?
Classic car breakdown cover is a tailored insurance offering designed specifically for older vehicles. This ensures that if your classic car encounters issues while you’re on the road, you’ll have the support of roadside assistance and recovery.
At Heritage Classic Car Insurance, breakdown cover is available as an add-on to your existing policy, underwritten by Financial & Legal Insurance Company. It’s designed for classic, older and specialist vehicles, giving you peace of mind whether you’re out for a Sunday run or heading to Europe.
BREAKDOWN COVER FOR CLASSIC CARS: WHAT’S INCLUDED
Whether you hold a single insurance policy for your classic car or a multi-vehicle policy that includes your older car among others, our breakdown cover can offer comprehensive protection for all your automobiles.
- Roadside assistance & local recovery: A trained mechanic will attend the scene to get you back on the road. If the vehicle can’t be fixed at the roadside, it will be recovered to a local garage.
- Nationwide recovery: Recovery of your vehicle and passengers to any single destination within policy limits, with a replacement vehicle or overnight accommodation arranged where needed.
- Homestart: If your vehicle breaks down at home or within one mile of your home address, we’ll arrange a recovery operator to come to you. This is now included as standard, where previously it was not.
- Unlimited callouts: There is no annual limit on the number of times you can call for assistance. Previously, the policy was limited to 6 callouts per year.
- Lockout cover: If you lock your keys inside your vehicle, we’ll arrange a recovery operator to attend and attempt to open it. If that’s not possible, your vehicle will be recovered to a suitable garage within 25 miles.
- Misfuel cover: If you put the wrong fuel in your car, a specialist will attend the roadside to drain and flush the fuel tank, and provide up to 10 litres of the correct fuel to get you on your way.
- Onward travel: The driver and up to six passengers are covered if the vehicle can’t be repaired the same day. Options include hotel accommodation, rail travel, a hire car, or a taxi, depending on your circumstances.
- European breakdown cover: Roadside assistance, recovery, onward transportation and vehicle repatriation across Europe. Cover applies for up to 30 days per trip, with a maximum of 90 days across the policy term

HOW DOES CAR BREAKDOWN COVER WORK?
This cover applies to all vehicles and insured drivers on your policy. If two insured vehicles on your multi car policy happened to break down at the same time, both can request roadside assistance.
However, if you’re an additional driver on someone else’s policy, a breakdown in their vehicle isn’t covered. They need to have their own breakdown cover in place.
Our multi-car insurance provides cover for drivers of all cars in the policy. This means you can save money not having to buy separate policies for each car and driver.

HOW DOES CLASSIC CAR EUROPEAN BREAKDOWN COVER WORK?
If you plan to regularly drive in Europe with your classic car, it’s worth having the right type of breakdown cover in place. Travelling abroad with older vehicles can come with its own challenges – and the costs can add up without reliable breakdown cover in place should the worst happen.
With Heritage breakdown cover, you have access to European assistance including Roadside Assistance, Recovery, Onward Transportation and Vehicle Repatriation across Europe.
European cover applies for up to 30 days per trip, with a maximum of 90 days in total across your policy term. If you plan multiple European trips, this is worth bearing in mind when planning your itinerary.
ADDITIONAL OPTIONS HERITAGE INSURANCE CAN PROVIDE

Motor legal cover
If you’re in a car accident, or a contract dispute about a car, you can get legal advice and expenses covered with motor legal expenses protection. Up to £100,000 in uninsured loss recovery and a 24/7 legal advice line are also included.
Key protect
If your key gets lost or stolen, key protect will cover you for the cost of calling out a locksmith, as well as replacement keys/fobs, and overnight accommodation for a night if needed. It will also provide you with vehicle hire for up to three days and cover onward travel costs.
