Heritage Classic Car Insurance was launched in 1965 when Chris Wilkinson founded Norton Insurance Brokers from his then-home in Kings Norton, Birmingham.
Chris set up Norton Insurance Brokers to provide specialist classic car insurance for both personal lines, under the Heritage brand, and commercial, under our sister brand Tradesure.
A classic car enthusiast through and through, Chris decided to combine his passion for cars with his experience in the insurance industry.
Chris recalls, “When I started working in insurance, I was a door-to-door salesman. From meeting people on a daily basis, it seemed the most common topic was car insurance and how people were dissatisfied with the general service provided.”
This gave Chris his new direction; to meet people’s demand for better service.
There weren’t many insurers at the time with a specialist policy designed for the classic car owner. Under the Heritage brand, Chris developed a brand new form of policy with a reputable underwriter, specifically designed for classic cars – one of the very first brokers to do so.
In the early years Chris worked from home and even at the roadside when it suited, arranging meetings on the dashboard of his Austin Healey Sprite. In 1967 the business moved to offices in Alum Rock, and later to Edgbaston where it is based today.
Chris’s son Mark joined the business in 2002 and became managing partner in 2014.
In 2015, Heritage celebrated its 50 year anniversary.
Speaking about the milestone, Chris said, “When I first started this business I didn’t expect we would be insuring tens of thousands of classic cars 50 years on. I’m pleased to say that we’ve remained an independent business, meaning we can offer a bespoke service to our clients.”
Today Norton is a limited company, with Chris as chairman and Mark as Managing Director. Heritage continues to provide classic car insurance as well as insurance for a wide range of other specialist vehicles, home cover, and a hugely popular multi car policy that covers modern and classic cars together.
Asked about the challenge of adapting to changing demands, Chris said, “moving with the times has never presented a problem, provided you do things properly in the first place.”
