Why Add Pothole Cover

UK roads see a high volume of pothole-related vehicle damage every year, and it’s rarely down to anything the driver did. The trouble is, claiming for this kind of damage on your main motor policy usually means paying your excess and putting your no-claims discount at risk.

Pothole Cover is designed to sit alongside your existing Heritage or Norton policy and take that decision off the table: instead of claiming on your comprehensive cover, you claim under Pothole Cover instead, and your main policy stays untouched.

Eligibility

Pothole Cover can only be added if:

  • You hold an active Heritage, Norton, or Tradesure car insurance policy at the point of purchase
  • Your vehicle is a private car, motorcycle, commercial vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes, or motorhome up to 3.5 tonnes
  • You’re based in, and the vehicle is used in, the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man

It costs £32 per car, per year and is added directly to your existing policy, there’s no separate application or new insurer to deal with.

What's Covered

Pothole Cover reimburses the cost of repairing pothole damage to your car on a new-for-old basis, no betterment deductions, so you get like-for-like replacement quality rather than a reduced payout for wear and tear.

Damage type Limit
Tyres £200 per tyre (up to £600 total per year)
Wheels £250 per wheel (up to £500 total per year)
Wheel alignment / rebalancing £150 per year
Suspension £500 per year
Bodywork/paint (incl. headlights) £250 per year
Overall cap £2,000 per period of insurance

HOW DOES CAR POTHOLE COVER WORK?

Pothole Cover works alongside your existing Heritage or Norton car insurance policy, not in place of it. Instead of claiming for pothole damage through your main policy, where you’d usually pay your excess and risk your no-claims discount, you claim directly under Pothole Cover instead.

Here’s the process in practice:

  1. You hit a pothole and it damages your tyres, wheels, suspension, bodywork or headlights.
  2. You photograph the pothole, making sure the location, date and time are visible or recorded.
  3. You report the pothole to the relevant local authority and get a reference number.
  4. You pay for the repair yourself and keep the receipt.
  5. You submit a claim, online through the claims portal, or by phone, with your photo evidence, the council reference number, and your repair receipt.
  6. You’re reimbursed on a new-for-old basis, up to the limit for that type of damage, within an overall cap of £2,000 per period of insurance.

You have 31 days from the date of the damage to report a claim. Your main motor policy stays untouched throughout, Pothole Cover settles separately, so it has no effect on your no-claims discount.

ADDITIONAL OPTIONS HERITAGE INSURANCE CAN PROVIDE

Pothole Cover is one of several add-ons available to Heritage policyholders to help make sure you’re fully protected. As well as breakdown cover for classic cars, you can choose from additional cover options at decent prices, including:

  • Excess Protection — available whether you have a single or multi-car policy, this gets your excess paid back to you if you need to make a claim.
  • Motor Legal Expenses Cover — helps cover legal costs if you’re involved in an accident that wasn’t your fault.
  • Key Protect — covers the cost of replacing lost, stolen or damaged car keys and locks.

Motor legal cover

If you’re in a car accident, or a contract dispute about a car, you can get legal advice and expenses covered with motor legal expenses protection. Up to £100,000 in uninsured loss recovery and a 24/7 legal advice line are also included.

Key protect

If your key gets lost or stolen, key protect will cover you for the cost of calling out a locksmith, as well as replacement keys/fobs, and overnight accommodation for a night if needed. It will also provide you with vehicle hire for up to three days and cover onward travel costs.
