Just 5% of UK classic cars stolen are recovered

Classic car theft is on the rise. Thieves stole 217 vehicles in the UK between mid 2015 until the end of 2016. Heritage Classic Car Insurance look at the reasons why and what we can do to prevent it.

Rising classic car values and the lack of car security are causing scandalous theft rates of our beloved classic cars. The UK recovered 5% of stolen classic cars. This crime isn’t just limited to the UK either. According to Classic Car Weekly newspaper, this is happening all over Europe. The UK is the 3rd highest country, behind Italy and France with 291 and 275 classic car thefts. Experts believe that organised gangs are largely to blame for these crimes. These gangs transport the classic cars all over Europe to be cloned or stripped for expensive classic parts.

The International Association of Auto Theft Investigations (IAATI) is helping police find trends in car theft. As new cars become harder to steal, the theft of cars over 30 years old is now more wide spread.

What can classic car owners do?

Classic car theft prevention

Vehicle experts from the police, the IAATI and the Society of the Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) are working together. They aim to develop the skills to identify what is being stolen and where from. This will help in classic car theft prevention. Owners will have to take responsibility by security marking their cars and keep accurate records of any changes made. This could help with tracing the car back to the owner.

British police forces have arrested several gangs responsible for Land Rover and Mini thefts across the country. They have commented that this will hopefully halt the momentum of gangs looking to steal more classic cars from the UK.
