Classic Car Stories

We’ve been scouring the web for the very best classic car stories, from epic sales to epic fails, and we’ll be sharing some of the very best tales here.

Let’s start with a classic car from a classic UK television show. Who remembers Minder?

Yes, that’s it, Arthur Daley and Terry McCann, played by George Cole and Dennis Waterman.

We all remember the ambitious and rather dodgy car dealer (and dealer of anything else that could turn a profit) and his bodyguard or ‘Minder’, on the classic show that ran for 10 series between 1979 and 1994.

981 Daimler Sovereign 4.2 Series III Saloon

But do you remember the car, one of the other stars of the show? It was Arthur’s 1981 Daimler Sovereign 4.2 Series III Saloon, which featured in series four to six. Powered by Jaguar’s 4.2-litre straight-six engine, the yellow (Portland Beige for the keener eyes amongst you) saloon was one of many driven by the character, but one of the few that became well known and well loved.

There’s an element of both epic sale and epic fail in this car’s story, as it recently sold at auction for over £32,000.

George Cole himself had originally tried to buy the car, but it was given away in a competition, only to be raffled a while later before being sold on eBay (apparently the raffle winner didn’t want it).

In 2014, it sold for over £15,000 in an auction before doubling in price earlier this year after a restoration job.

An epic sale by any accounts, although it is widely accepted that Arthur Daley’s dodgy character and association with the car caused a reputational issue that affected sales in real life!

Future Classics

July 28th, 2016

As defining a classic car is somewhat down to general consensus and subjective views, how do we know what will become the ‘classic’ of the future?

Sure, we can talk about absolute classics and modern classics, but which cars in general use today will be the classics of tomorrow? Well, we’ve been discussing this in the Heritage offices and have had a jolly good go at guessing.
