WHEN DOES A CAR BECOME A CLASSIC?

There are no hard and fast rules for what defines a classic car – although age requirements often come into classic car insurance criteria.

Most classic car auto insurance companies and enthusiasts agree that a classic will usually be an old car, at least 20 years old. But other cars, including rarities, special editions and performance cars, can also fit the ‘modern classic’ criteria for car insurance purposes.

Broadly speaking, a classic is typically a car that:

  • was built before 2000
  • isn’t widely available to purchase new
  • is cherished
  • has limited mileage on the clock
  • isn’t being used as an everyday vehicle
  • as some appeal as a collectible

Are you unsure if your vehicle falls into the criteria? Don’t worry, simply get in touch with us by calling 0121 248 9229 or fill in the contact form.

FOR OLDER CLASSICS

DO I NEED VINTAGE CAR INSURANCE?

You will need vintage car insurance if you’re the owner of a vintage car. Any vehicle manufactured between 1919 and 1930 may be classified as a vintage car, according to major car clubs. The parameters can vary, but whenever your car was built, we’ll do our best to build you the bespoke policy it needs. When your car is a piece of living motor history, you’ll want to protect it with specific vintage car insurance that takes the true value of your car into account.

With over 55 years’ experience offering vintage car insurance in the UK, we have access to a wide panel of antique and vintage car insurance providers to provide the best deals on the market. We provide vintage vehicle insurance on a wide range of car makes, from British-built to imports. Whether you own an Austin 7 or a Ford Model A, we can get you exclusive vintage car insurance quotes at competitive prices and with great additional options to suit your needs.

Vintage car values can change quickly based on market demand, so it’s important to make sure your agreed value is regularly reviewed. We can offer free agreed valuation, or you can have your car valued independently. Having a specialist policy for a vintage car is vital if you want to protect it for what it’s worth. You can also take advantage of discounted premiums with limited mileage discounts, and you’re covered if you want to exhibit your vintage vehicle at shows.

CLASSIC CAR INSURANCE FAQS

Is classic car insurance cheaper?

Typically, classic car insurance tends to be cheaper than standard car insurance. This is because specialist vehicles are driven less, do less mileage, and are usually carefully looked after by their owners – all of which is reflected in the rates set by insurers. At Heritage, we strive to offer the best value classic car insurance for our customers. Of course, some rare or performance cars may be a bit more expensive to insure, but again, with limited mileage you’re going to see some savings.

What’s the difference between classic car insurance and standard car insurance?

Classic car insurance is tailored to older, cherished vehicles that are typically driven occasionally for pleasure. This means you’ll often get a lower premium due to limited usage. Standard car insurance covers everyday vehicles used more often for activities like commuting, as well as pleasure.

How old do I need to be to take out a classic car insurance policy?

The minimum age is 25 for a classic insurance policy through Heritage. In some circumstances we may be able to provide cover for drivers 21 and over, subject to strict terms and conditions. The maximum age for new policyholders getting classic car insurance with Heritage is 79 years; for existing clients there are no upper age limits.

What is the difference between vintage and classic cars?

Although there isn’t a set definition for both vintage and classic cars, a classic car is typically a car that is 15-20 years of age or older, and desirable as a collectible. Vintage cars are vehicles that were manufactured between 1919 and 1930, although the timeframes can vary. The common denominator is that they both have timeless designs and are owned as cherished vehicles.

Does a classic car insurance policy cover me for driving other cars?

No, generally you would already have this with your standard car insurance. If you are unsure, check your Certificate of Motor Insurance for the ‘Driving Other Cars’ wording.

Our multi car insurance does cover you to drive other cars, but only if you are over 25 and your everyday cars are on cover with Heritage Insurance Brokers. The other car you wish to drive must be insured in its own right, not owned by the policyholder, and for emergency use only.

Do you offer a discount to classic car club members?

Yes, we can offer a 15% discount for classic car club members, as well as members of the Military Vehicle Trust and Green Lane Association, plus to NHS staff. Just let us know which club you’re a member of when you request your quote.

My car isn’t finished yet; can I insure it while I’m restoring it?

Yes, a policy is available for your restoration project. Providing the car is garaged we can insure it on a ‘laid up’ basis, which covers your car for accidental damage, fire and theft. Remember to change this to standard insurance before driving your classic car to its first MOT after restoration, if an MOT is needed.

I have no garage to store my vehicle in; can I still get classic car insurance?

No garage doesn’t mean no classic car insurance; we may still be able to offer you cover. Just get in touch to discuss your situation and we’ll be happy to talk you through your options.

What cars are eligible for vintage car insurance?

If your car was manufactured between 1919 and 1930, your car is most likely vintage. If you’re unsure as to whether your car is eligible for vintage car insurance, you can get in touch with us. If your car isn’t eligible for vintage car insurance, don’t worry – we can still cover it! We offer many other types of specialist vehicle insurance to suit your needs, including classic car insurance and multi car insurance.

Can I get vintage car insurance immediately?

Yes. Once payment has been arranged for your vintage auto insurance, cover will be in place immediately.
