We’re pleased to announce the release of Richard Jones’s new book Through the Lanes and into the Forests, a personal glimpse into British Rallying in the 1960s. As a spectator and photographer during this time, Richard has taken a trip down memory lane to bring us a unique collection of personal photographs, observations and analyses of the decade which changed rally driving forever.
In this period, the majority of both professional and amateur photographers were still shooting in black and white. Richard was often the only person taking colour photographs at many of the rally events he attended, making this a particularly unique and vivid account of those overnight rally drives.
Richard’s previous works include Putting Wales, Carmarthenshire and Llandovery on the Map, an exploration of the development of cartography in Wales which we reported on last year. The book on rallying has been a labour of love, undertaken over several years, and was partly inspired by his work with Old Stager, the magazine of the Historic Rally Car Register.
Well-researched and with a fascinating story to tell, Through the Lanes and into the Forests delves into the wonderous history of rallying in a way not seen on paper before, and is a must for anybody interested in the pivotal decade which built rallying as we know it today. It also includes a foreword by British Rally Champion Brian Culcheth, winner of the British Rally Championship in 1978.
