SORN and Laid-Up Insurance: What’s the Difference and Do You Need Both?

Article

If you’ve ever taken a classic car off the road, you’ve likely come across both terms. SORN and laid-up insurance are often mentioned in the same breath — but they are not the same thing, and confusing the two can leave your vehicle exposed in ways you might not expect.

At Heritage, our Managing Director Mark Wilkinson, Team Manager Liam Campbell and the team have been helping classic and heritage car owners protect their vehicles for over 60 years. One of the most common points of confusion we encounter is owners assuming that declaring SORN means their car is automatically covered, or that laid-up insurance and SORN are interchangeable. They aren’t, and understanding the distinction could matter a great deal if something goes wrong.

What Is SORN?

SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It is a legal declaration made to the DVLA confirming that your vehicle will not be driven or kept on a public road. Once declared, your car must remain on private property, a garage, driveway, or private land.

SORN is a legal status, not a type of insurance. It tells the DVLA your vehicle is off the road. It says nothing about whether your car is protected against fire, theft, or damage while it sits in storage.

Key facts about SORN:

  • Free to declare via GOV.UK
  • Does not expire annually — remains active until the vehicle is taxed, sold, scrapped, or exported
  • Exempts you from vehicle tax and the legal requirement to hold road insurance
  • Does not protect your vehicle against any physical risk

What Is Laid-Up Insurance?

Laid-up insurance, sometimes called SORN insurance, is a specialist type of cover designed for vehicles that are declared off the road. It is an insurance product, not a legal requirement.

Where SORN removes your legal obligations as a road user, laid-up insurance steps in to protect your vehicle against the risks that remain even when it isn’t moving, fire, theft, and accidental damage being the most significant.

For a classic or heritage car, these risks are real. A garaged vehicle is still vulnerable to garage fires, flood damage, opportunist theft, and incidents during restoration work. Laid-up insurance exists precisely because a SORN declaration offers no protection against any of them.

Do You Need Both SORN and Laid-Up Insurance?

For most classic car owners, yes, and here is why.

SORN handles your legal obligation. It notifies the DVLA your vehicle is off the road, exempts you from road tax, and removes the requirement to hold standard road insurance.

Laid-up insurance handles the protection side. It covers your vehicle against fire, theft, and damage during the period it is stored, the risks SORN does nothing to address.

Think of it this way: SORN tells the authorities your car is off the road. Laid-up insurance protects it while it’s there.

At Heritage, our laid-up insurance is designed specifically for classic, vintage, and heritage vehicles, including those mid-restoration or without a current MOT, and works alongside your SORN declaration to give you complete peace of mind while your car is stored.

Very good price for my classic VW campervan. New quote was the same as last year so can't complain at all. Added breakdown and recovery for a good price that beat AA by a long way. Very helpful staff on the phone. Excellent service.

Another year of insuring my two classic cars with Heritage. Very competitive renewal. Agent Seema was very helpful and patient in adding another driver to my policy. The customer portal is great for accessing policy paperwork and updating details. I would highly recommend.

I have recently been in contact with Heritage Insurance Brokers, who I have had my classic 1960 Morris Mini Minor insured through for many years. I wanted to increase the agreed value. The team were most helpful. A gave them a history oqr the car and provided 6 photographs of the car including the interior, engine bay etc. Within two days they cam back to me agreeing the value I wanted at a very satisfctory premium

Heritage’s laid-up insurance could cover your vehicle against fire, theft, and accidental damage, even without a current MOT.

Why Does This Matter More for Classic Car Owners?

For a modern car, leaving it uninsured during a SORN period may be an acceptable risk, the vehicle’s value is known, parts are available, and replacement is relatively straightforward.

For a classic or heritage car, the calculation is very different.

Irreplaceability

Many classic cars cannot simply be replaced if lost to fire or theft. A matching example may not exist, or the cost to source one could far exceed what any standard settlement would cover.

Agreed Value

Heritage’s classic car insurance policies are available on an agreed value basis, meaning the payout in the event of a total loss reflects the true value of the vehicle, not a depreciated market estimate. This same principle applies to our laid-up policies, and it matters enormously when the vehicle concerned is irreplaceable.

Restoration Risk

Many heritage cars are SORN’d specifically because they are undergoing restoration. During this period, a vehicle may be partially disassembled, stored with components removed, or kept in a working garage environment, all of which increase exposure to accidental damage and fire risk. Standard home or contents insurance is unlikely to cover a vehicle in this state.

Can You Have Laid-Up Insurance Without Declaring SORN?

Technically yes, but it is rarely the right approach. If your vehicle is not declared SORN, it remains on the road register, which means it should in principle be taxed and insured for road use under continuous insurance enforcement rules.

If you intend to keep your classic car off the road for any meaningful period, declaring SORN is the correct legal step. Laid-up insurance then provides the protection layer on top. The two work in combination, not as alternatives to each other.

What Does Heritage’s Laid-Up Insurance Cover?

Our laid-up insurance for classic and heritage vehicles may include cover for:

  • Fire and theft: protecting your vehicle against two of the most significant risks while in storage
  • Accidental damage: broader cover for incidents that occur while the vehicle is laid up, including during restoration

Cover is available for vehicles without a current MOT, making it well suited to classic cars undergoing work or awaiting recommissioning. The cost of a laid-up policy will vary depending on your vehicle’s value, storage location, and claims history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SORN the same as laid-up insurance?

No. SORN is a legal declaration to the DVLA that your vehicle is off the road. Laid-up insurance is a specialist policy that protects your vehicle against fire, theft, and damage while it is stored. They serve different purposes and are best used together.

Do I need laid-up insurance if I have declared SORN?

You are not legally required to hold laid-up insurance once SORN is declared. However, SORN provides no physical protection for your vehicle. For a classic or heritage car, laid-up insurance may be well worth considering to protect against fire, theft, and accidental damage while the vehicle is stored.

Can I get laid-up insurance if my classic car has no MOT?

Yes. Heritage’s laid-up insurance is available for classic vehicles without a current MOT, including those undergoing restoration. Visit our laid-up insurance page for further details.

Will my home insurance cover my classic car while it's SORN'd in my garage?

In most cases, no. Standard home or contents insurance policies are unlikely to provide meaningful cover for a classic car stored on your property, particularly one that is mid-restoration or of specialist value. A dedicated laid-up policy is the more appropriate cover for this situation.

Can I drive my car if it has a SORN and laid-up insurance?

No. Laid-up insurance does not cover road use. The only circumstance in which a SORN vehicle may be driven on a public road is to attend a pre-booked MOT appointment, and you would need appropriate road insurance in place for that journey, not a laid-up policy.

What happens to my no-claims bonus if I switch to laid-up insurance?

This will depend on your insurer and policy terms. It is worth discussing with your insurer before making any changes to ensure your no-claims bonus is preserved where possible.

Cover Your Classic Car While It’s Off the Road

SORN handles your legal obligation. Laid-up insurance handles the protection. For a classic or heritage vehicle, one that may be irreplaceable and years in the making, having both in place is the approach that makes sense.
