If your classic or heritage car spends time off the road, whether it’s laid up over winter, mid-restoration, or simply waiting for its next outing, you may have declared it SORN. But once you’ve done that, are you legally required to keep it insured?
The short answer is no. But for classic car owners, the full picture is worth understanding before you cancel your policy.
At Heritage, our Managing Director Mark Wilkinson and the team have been helping classic and heritage car owners protect their vehicles for over 60 years. In that time, we’ve seen first-hand what can go wrong when a car is left uninsured during a SORN period — and why laid-up cover matters more than many owners realise.
What Is SORN?
SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It’s the formal declaration you make to the DVLA to confirm your vehicle will not be driven or kept on a public road. Once in place, your car must be kept on private property, a garage, driveway, or private land.
You can declare SORN for free via GOV.UK. You’ll need your V5C logbook reference or V11 tax reminder. SORN doesn’t expire annually, it remains active until you tax the vehicle, sell it, scrap it, or export it.
Is Insurance Legally Required on a SORN Vehicle?
No. When your vehicle is declared SORN and kept off public roads, UK law does not require you to hold car insurance. This is the only exception to the UK’s continuous insurance enforcement (CIE) rules, which would otherwise require all registered vehicles to be insured at all times.
Provided your car remains on private property, you are not breaking any laws by letting your road policy lapse during the SORN period.
Should You Still Insure a SORN Classic Car?
Just because it isn’t a legal requirement doesn’t mean going without cover is the right decision, particularly for a classic or heritage vehicle.
Vehicles that are laid up in storage are still exposed to real risks:
Fire
Garage fires can and do happen. For a classic car that may be irreplaceable, fire damage without cover could mean a total, unrecoverable loss.
Theft
Specialist and heritage vehicles attract attention. A SORN declaration offers no protection against a determined thief, and classic cars can be especially difficult to recover or replace.
Accidental Damage
Falling objects, flooding, or incidents during a restoration project can cause significant damage to a vehicle even when it hasn’t turned a wheel.
For a vehicle you’ve invested years of time and money into, going uninsured during a SORN period is a risk many classic car owners choose not to take. Our laid-up insurance is designed precisely for this situation , providing meaningful cover at a lower cost than a standard road policy, because your car isn’t being driven.
What Does Laid-Up Insurance Cover?
Laid-up insurance, sometimes called SORN insurance, typically covers your classic car against:
- Fire and theft: the core level of protection most classic car owners want as a minimum while their vehicle is in storage
- Accidental damage: broader cover that also protects against damage caused while the vehicle is laid up
Because the car isn’t on the road, the risk profile is generally lower, which may mean laid-up cover costs less than your usual classic car insurance policy. The exact premium will depend on your vehicle’s value, where it’s stored, and your claims history.
At Heritage, our laid-up policies are available specifically for classic, vintage, and heritage vehicles, including those mid-restoration or without a current MOT. Find out more on our laid-up insurance page.
