A press launch in 1975 at the le grand motte in the south of France saw Porsche revealing a front mounted water cooled engine sports car for the first time. All Porsche models had been rear or mid mounted air cooled engines until the Porsche 924 was launched.

Initially the 924 was going to be the entry level Porsche taking over where the 914 had left off but as it was a joint venture between VW and Porsche VW wanted their own engine sitting in the front, however with the oil crisis in the early seventies forcing automobile related regulatory changes and with VW changing their direction in the auto industry the idea was put on hold. VW then decided to go with a Golf based coupe called the Scirroco and Porsche bought the 924 designs from their partners in this new model and VW became the sub contactors building the 924 for Porsche.

The Porsche 924 sold well with style and quality being top notch, the only problem was lack of performance but Porsche soon answered its critics with the 924 Turbo being described as fast… at last by the press!

A BUYERS GUIDE

The Porsche 924 was a financial stabiliser when the company was at a low in the mid – seventies originally designed by Porsche and commissioned out to VW using many VW/Audi parts and then being sold back to Porsche when VW changed their initial plans. Early models namely pre 1980 cars were not fully galvanised so although all 924 will show signs of rust if not treated accordingly the earliest models will generally be the worst.

Check the battery tray under the left side of the windscreen as they can rot, if the rubber flap on the outlet drain gets blocked, the fuse-box is underneath and so it is imperative no water gets in here. Hatch leaks are common so check the boot floor for any corrosion if there is a sun roof the same happens here so check the rear foot wells as well.

Cam-belt changes should be changed every 30,000 miles, so check the cars history for fuel tank corrosion.

From 1979 all 924’s were given a VW/Audi five speed gear box which will last providing it is well maintained although the turbo models had a G31 gearbox which tends to crunch in 1st and 2nd gears but this is normally tolerated by owners. Look out for leaky front struts on 924. Brakes are standard across the range. Interiors are generally vinyl seats, so check for splits and cracks; the fascia also has a tendency to crack although refurbishment kits are available.

INTERESTING FACT

The 924 has its own racing series in the UK run by the BRSCC and Porsche Racing Drivers Association. The Porsche 924 Championship started in 1992 by Jeff May who was championship coordinator until his death on 10th November 2003. Jeff May was also one of the founding members of Porsche Club Great Britain. In the United States, the 924S is also eligible to race in the 944-Spec racing class.

Porsche 944 Turbo (1985-1991)

The Porsche 944 was all the good bits of the 924 with added 928 sparkle. The 944 bridged the gap between the 924 and the 911 and was accepted as a true Porsche unlike the 924 although it came from the same factory which was Audi in Neckarsulm. With a 2.5 litre inline four cylinder engine developed by Porsche it had the right credentials to earn its status in the family album.
