In the first of a series on well-known classic car collectors, there is no other way than to start with car enthusiast and ex-new-former Top Gear presenter, Chris Evans.
Full name Christopher James Evans, Chris was born in Warrington in 1966 and has spent his career in show business. He’s presented television programmes such as The Big Breakfast, Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush, TFI Friday and most recently, Top Gear. Chris has also spent much of his career on the radio, currently presenting the morning show on BBC Radio 2.
His love for cars has been well documented over the years, with some major purchases and high profile sales. Most recently a dozen or so of his cars went on sale at the 2015 Goodwood Revival Bonham’s auction, where he sold at least half of them.
Making up just part of his overall collection, the unsold cars included a rare mint green 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/6C (guide price £3m), a 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS Spyder (£1.6m), and a Ferrari 250 GT Lusso (£1.4m).
Chris also famously owns the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car, which was up for auction but didn’t sell. He did however sell his Ferrari SWB Recreation for over half a million.
More about Chris and his cars
Chris Evans buys and sells through his company Zimple Ltd. and is reported to have turned over £17m in 2015. He is also responsible for launching CarFest, a family-orientated car and music festival, which takes place in Cheshire in July and Hampshire in August.
With sales occurring quite regularly, it’s difficult to pin down his complete collection at any one time. However, he’s well known for buying a Ferrari GTO for £12m and once having his collection of Ferrari’s painted white.
Chris has also featured in our recent article about the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder SWB, spending over £5m on one owned by James Coburn.
