Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 14 (1955 – 1974)

Volkswagen had great success with their people’s car the Beetle and now it was time for something a bit more exotic. The Type 14 or Karmann Ghia was debuted at the 1953 Paris Auto Show as a styling concept for Ghia. It was a 2+2 coupe with hand-shaped body panels smoothed with English pewter normally used in the production of top end cars. The Karmann Ghia adopted the same floorpan and engine variations as the Beetle and so it always looked a lot faster than it actually was.

Volkswagen Scirocco (1974 – 1992)

When the Volkswagen Scirocco was launched in 1974 at the Geneva Motor Show it was the replacement for the beautiful Karmann Ghia which although had all the right looks of a sports coupe from the 50’s and 60’s never really fulfilled it’s potential as a real sports car due to its lack of power and in some terms, it’s looks. The Karmann Ghia tended to appeal to female customers, whilst the Scirocco (code name EA398 whilst in development), designed by Italdesign in Turin, appealed to both markets.

Volkswagen Beetle (1957-1967)

The Volkswagen Beetle was produced over seven decades from 1946 until 2004 no other car had been made for so long and remained so similar in looks than this German icon. Its purpose initially was to get Nazi Germany mobile but after the war the British army took control and the car was sold across the world as a practical and economical run around.

This basic car was constantly being improved and updated moving very nicely with the times but also sticking to its air cooled routes much like its Porsche cousin it really was a case of if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.

The buying public agreed as the GTI sold well and it didn’t take long for other car makers to catch on such as Ford’s XR2, Peugeot’s 205 GTI and Vauxhall’s Astra GTE to name but a few started to come out of the woodwork.
